Signed and Scrubbed: August 2026 hospital M&A

Welcome back to Signed and Scrubbed, a monthly roundup of hospital deals, developments, and bankruptcies.

This month, health systems everywhere from Maine to Colorado moved closer to finalizing mergers. Here’s your August 2026 rundown.

AdventHealth/Intermountain Health. The hospital systems announced on Aug. 6 that they had signed a definitive agreement to affiliate five AdventHealth hospitals (AdventHealth Avista, AdventHealth Castle Rock, AdventHealth Littleton, AdventHealth Parker, and AdventHealth Porter) and three Intermountain hospitals (Good Samaritan Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, and Platte Valley Hospital) to connect care across the greater Denver area. Other assets, like the medical practices and clinics of the two health systems, will also be affiliated.

MaineHealth. On Aug. 10, Portland-based MaineHealth shared that state regulators have approved a plan to have York Hospital, also based in Maine, join the health system. The deal is expected to finalize on Oct. 1.

Sanford Health/North Memorial Health. The Office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison entered into a 10-year oversight agreement with Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Sanford Health and Robbinsdale, Minnesota-based North Memorial Health on Aug. 28, a major step toward finalizing a planned merger into one nonprofit health system.

Universal Health Services. The King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based for-profit health system completed its acquisition of virtual mental health platform Talkspace on Aug. 17 for $835 million, according to an SEC filing.

WVU Medicine. The West Virginia University Health System, known as WVU Medicine, announced on Aug. 6 it has entered into a definitive affiliation agreement for Fulton County Medical Center (a critical access hospital in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania) to join the system. As part of the transaction, WVU promised to invest up to $17 million to modernize the hospital.
