Welcome back to Signed and Scrubbed, a monthly roundup of hospital deals, developments, and bankruptcies.
This month, one health system took steps to switch from a for-profit, private equity-backed system to a nonprofit. You don’t see that every day!
Here’s more for your May 2026 roundup.
Mizell Memorial Hospital. The 49-bed Opp, Alabama-based hospital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 29 to “stabilize the hospital financially” while still serving patients. (We know, this wasn’t May. But the end of April is close enough, right?)
Prime Healthcare. The Ontario, California-based health system completed its acquisition of 214-bed Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in Illinois, Becker’s reported on May 11, making it Prime’s 55th hospital.
Quorum Health. On May 21, the 11-hospital Brentwood, Tennessee-based system announced a definitive agreement with QKA Health Corporation to switch from a for-profit, private equity-backed provider to a nonprofit.
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). On May 4, UPMC signed a definitive agreement with Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health to purchase Steubenville, Ohio-based Trinity Health System, which includes Trinity East and Trinity West (total 182 beds), Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital (6 beds), and Trinity Twin City Medical Center (25 beds). The deal is expected to close this fall.
York Hospital. The 54-bed York, Maine hospital received on May 14 a certificate of need approval to join the Westbrook-based MaineHealth system, a crucial step toward finalizing a merger.
