Welcome back to Signed and Scrubbed, a monthly roundup of hospital deals, developments, and bankruptcies.
This month, Orlando Health expanded its Alabama footprint while hospitals in Mississippi and Missouri filed for bankruptcy. Here’s more for your April 2026 roundup.
Fitzgibbon Hospital. The Marshall, Missouri-based hospital (60 beds) filed for bankruptcy on April 21, citing rising operating costs, workforce shortages, and untenable reimbursement from payers including Medicare and Medicaid.
Greenwood Leflore Hospital. The 25-bed Greenwood, Mississippi-based hospital filed for bankruptcy and laid off 86 employees, the Mississippi Free Press reported on April 16. This outlet said the filing comes after the Mississippi Division of Medicaid took back “millions of dollars” in overpayments made to the hospital two years ago.
Jackson Memorial Hospital. The 1,550-bed Miami, Florida-based hospital opened a new emergency room on April 23. The $400 million project includes 60 general exam rooms, 50 observation rooms, seven acute care rooms, a triage space, and a pharmacy.
Orlando Health. On April 8, the Florida health system shared plans to acquire Anniston, Alabama-based RMC Health System, which includes a 375-bed medical center. If completed, RMC will become part of Orlando Health’s Alabama Region, which already includes Baptist Health since 2024.
Unity Health. After only three years of operation, the 502-bed Searcy, Arkansas-based system said it’s closing one of its emergency department and medical units, Unity Health - Jacksonville, and turning it into a psychiatric hospital, Becker’s reported on April 7.
