Humana has plans to shake up its C-suite in 2024, executives with the insurer and health services company announced this week.

Bruce Broussard, who has led Humana since 2013, will step down as CEO in the second half of 2024. He will remain a strategic advisor into 2025, according to the company’s transition plan.

Jim Rechtin, president and CEO of medical group Envision Healthcare, will take over as Humana’s president and COO on January 8, 2024, before assuming the CEO title upon Broussard’s departure.

Humana Board Chairman Kurt Hilzinger offered that Rechtin, who previously served as president of UnitedHealthGroup’s OptumCare, is well suited to help “take Humana into the next phase of growth and transformation.”

“Jim brings a strong combination of operational, industry, and CEO expertise,” he said in a statement. “His firsthand experience leading through challenges and opportunities of a changing healthcare services continuum will help accelerate our integrated care strategy at pace.”

Broussard added that he looks forward to partnering with Rechtin during the transition.

The transition announcement came just weeks before Humana executives had been scheduled to brief investors on the company’s third quarter earnings.

Humana is the latest company to announce leadership changes. Walgreens Boots Alliance executives announced earlier this week that Tim Wentworth—the former CEO for Evernorth, Cigna’s health services organization—will take over as that company’s next CEO on October 23.
