Our rundown of Movers & Shakers for September 2023

Rosalind Brewer: The Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) CEO stepped down on August 31, but agreed to continue advising the company as it searches for a new top executive. The board of directors appointed Ginger Graham, WBA’s lead independent director, interim CEO.

Chris Allen: The interim CFO of Keck Medicine officially took over that role on August 31. Allen also previously served as CFO of Keck Medical Center of the University of Southern California.

Mary DiGangi: Insurer MetroPlusHealth appointed the former VP of human resources, inpatient facilities, and labor relations for Metropolitan Jewish Health System as the health plan’s new chief people officer.

Robert Espinoza: The EVP of policy at PHI—a direct care workforce advocacy organization—was named a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution.

Tom Fluegel: Cloud-based health equity platform Spatially Health announced the National Committee for Quality Assurance COO as a new advisory board member.

Arnar Geirsson: The cardiac surgeon took over as director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Surgical Heart Valve Program at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University Irving Medical Center on September 1. Geirsson, who served as surgeon-in-chief of cardiac surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center, also took over as a professor of surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Mehran Habibi: Northwell Health announced the breast surgeon and researcher as its director of breast surgery for Staten Island University Hospital and chief of breast surgery for the New York-based system’s Western region, which spans Staten Island, Manhattan, and Westchester County. The health system also named Habibi as the Northwell Cancer Institute’s director of international program development.

Amardeep Kahlon: Supplements brand Designs for Health named its former chief commercial officer as its new CEO.

James “Jim” Jones: The FDA selected the Environmental Protection Agency veteran as its first deputy commissioner for human foods—a role tasked with setting and advancing priorities for a unified Human Foods Program. Jones, who most recently worked as president of J. Jones Environmental, took over the position on September 24.

Jeremy Kaye: Peer support provider Cancer Hope Network recently named the Deloitte audit and assurance senior manager and cancer survivor as chair of its new Young Cancer Professionals Committee.
