Mount Sinai Hospital is giving a pharmacy on its main campus in Manhattan a makeover, according to plans filed with the New York State Department of Health this summer.

The renovations—estimated to cost roughly $4 million—are intended to bring the pharmacy, located in the hospital’s Annenberg building, up to code with sterile compounding regulations and add a hazardous drugs storage room. Currently, hazardous drugs are transported via a public corridor, according to the plans.

“The renovations and expansion of the pharmacy space at the Mount Sinai Hospital create a larger footprint with updated mechanical systems and better space utilization resulting in a more efficient pharmacy that meets patient growth and the personalized medication needs of the patients we serve,” Susan Mashni, Mount Sinai Health System’s SVP and chief pharmacy officer, told Healthcare Brew.

The new hazardous drugs storage room is planned to be in what’s currently an IT office that’ll be moved to another space on the hospital’s campus, according to the plans.

The state health department gave initial approval to the plans August 16, according to spokesperson Erin Clary. The department is waiting on Mount Sinai to provide notification that construction has started, and the renovations will be subject to an inspection from the health department before the updated pharmacy can be used, Clary said.

The renovation is expected to start in December and take 10 months to complete, according to the plans.
